Tamil New Year changed - what a mess!!!

As usual, I woke up on the 14th and started wishing people Happy New Year and got a sticker shock - It is no longer the Tamil New Year!! Found out that Mr. Tamilmagan (karunanidhi) - serious pun intended - has passed a legislation to move the new year to January 14th. Come on, doesn’t he have anything better to do?
How would the western world react if someone changes the New year from Jan 1st to Dec 25th or the thanksgiving day!! The new year always starts at the beginning of the solar calendar year, which is the month of chitirai; similar to January for the western calendar.
I am pretty sure the next Tamilnadu chief minister will revert it back - wishful thinking??

Yes. Whether it is Pongal or Tamil New Year is celeberated by the Tamil Speaking Hindus. So it is definitely a Hindu festival. Secular Government? cannot change any custom followed by any religion. Mr.Tamilar Talaivar (Karunanidhi) always meddled with Hindu religion. Today (14.01.2009) I have travelled many towns of Tamil Nadu and found in 99% of the houses they have written below the Kolam “Wish You Happy Pongal” only and nobody written any thing about Tamil New Year. So people consider only 14 th April/ 1st of Chithrai as tamil New Year.

I am glad to hear that people are not blindly following the new rule. I am still banking on the next government to reverse this ridiculous rule.
