Is Atlanta the wrong place for a startup like myGPSID.com?

5 September 2008 No Comment

Now that we are out in the public with the beta launch, I have started reaching out to potential investors, advisors and also future employees. One question that keeps coming back is  Is Atlanta the right place for a startup like myGPSID.com?

One of our close mentor and advisor told me point-blank that I have to move to the Bay area. The question he asked me was “Do you think  Hotmail or even Google would have raised money in Atlanta?“. It’s a very simple question to answer;  Atlanta is a good place for B2B and enterprise software companies..

Even though it was hurtful to hear that we may  have to move out, I was equally happy with the fact that a sharp individual could easily understand our vision and compared us to Google and Hotmail - we thought that was cool to be compared to these heavy hitters.

At this time, we are keeping the engineer team completely remote. We have engineers in US and India, and  have no plans of opening an office for the engineers. Just think about this - 99% of the open source contributions are done remotely and why can’t I manage  the engineer remotely? However, marketing, data center operations are a whole different story which we need to address pretty quickly.

Comments are welcome from the many entrepreneurs out there…
