Linked-in or no linked-in; this is not linked-in flaw instead, it's the flaw in our own insecurities and character.

Even in the old tradition phone call reference methods, people gave false information. People give false statements in courts where they swear honesty before doing that. One has to make his own judgment and take things with grain of salt. Usually I can read a recommendation and totally see thru it, plus you can, in most cases, check the credibility of Reference giver. I would not judge John Doe just because a friend said he was a bad boss. This statement " enormously insecure, self-doubting, pessimistic and sarcastic personality wrapped in Xanax" in itself is an exaggeration and verbose expression of ones feeling/frustrations than facts.

my two cents.

I agree with you. There are sites that generates ideas for recommendation letters, if not, take a look at recommendin.com - It's one of these sites to get some Linkedin recommendation samples, people may use as an automatic way to get ideas for people who want to recommend.

Even I have had encountered this problem. Tell you what, it sucks to give a good or even decent recommendation to an unworthy person. Like any other system, there will always be loop holes. I guess the best thing an employer could do is make sure to call relevant references.
